Biomass to Products
Release Date: September 2026
Lead Organisation: IBERS, Aberystwyth University
This module has been designed to raise awareness of the technological options for developing plant based alternatives to products generally derived from fossil fuels ,and to showcase IBERS research in this area.
You will explore the technological and scientific innovations driving the transition from fossil-based to plant-based products. Focusing on industrial biotechnology and biorefining, we will examine the full value chain from feedstock selection and biomass pre-treatment to advanced conversion and optimisation processes. Through case studies and emerging research, particularly from IBERS, you will gain insights into sustainable alternatives to conventional materials and chemicals. The module equips learners with the knowledge and analytical skills to critically assess and design biotechnological solutions for a bio-based economy.
This module will cover the following content:
- Introduction to Industrial Biotechnology and Biorefining
- Feedstocks and Raw Materials Part 1
- Feedstocks and Raw Materials Part 2
- Biomass pre-treatment
- Engineering Biology
- Precision Fermentation
- Downstream Processing
- Bioprocess Design and Optimisation
- Emerging Technologies in Industrial Biotechnology
- Case Studies and Industry Applications
